Saturday Slaughter

Ahh yep, blogging the same day it actually happened. Wow!

Today is Saturday and today was Saturday Slaughter Session time. Now Gym Ninja had yet another late night due to nothing other than general 'faffing' so had to drag herself out of bed today. She was also hoping that her mahooosive order from Maximuscle would arrive seeing as it hadn't done yesterday? By mahoosive Gym Ninja means 3 tubs of Promax (some with the special offer of 20% extra free...check out THIS LINK if you are interested in that as it is also on selected flavours of Promax, Promax Extreme & Promax Diet), a box of Promax Crisp bars which are fab if you want a guilt-free sweet snack yet have some protein too (good with a nice hot cuppa by the way!) and a tub of Promax Diet.  They are doing some good offers at the moment so go check out the links and see what else they have offers on as they do tend to change all the time?

No sign.

Pah.

But a Slaughter Session waits for no Ninja, so out of the house galloped GN, with barely enough time to neck a Diet Emerge Energy Drink (still an absolute bargain at 25p per can of chemical fizziness ) before arriving at the gym. It was quieter than usual. Maybe down to the fact that the schools have now broken up and all the parents are out entertaining their bored children?

As there was a Y in the day, this meant NO air con was on at the gym. Maybe those huge air con panels on the wall are merely 'Representative Art Installations'?  Anyhow, Gym Ninja found herself warming up on a treadmill  next to Clippy who was currently doing her standard 10% incline, leaning back holding on type walk. A girl walked past, a huge fake flower the size of a side-plate clipped onto her head. Remarkable. Lycra and clip-in hair ornaments. Uhh, the warm up was hard work. Last week's boundless energy seems a distant memory. But up the stairs to the Spin Studio climbed Gym Ninja, and took up her place on her 'usual' bike.

Dangly immediately scolded Gym Ninja.

"Where were you AGAIN last week? You said you'd come in Sunday! I looked a right muppet as I put me towel on yer spin bike to save it for you and I had to move it to let someone else sit there!"

Dangly had pain and hurt in his eyes.....

"Yeh sorry about that but I slept in." Confessed Gym Ninja. "Er, I'm not going to be here tomorrow either as I've a client to train".

Dangly looked as if he were about to explode.

"OK so that will be THREE Sunday Spin Sessions in a row you'll have missed. That's IT! You're getting a warning!"

At this, he waggled his finger. Gym Ninja gave him a 'look'.

The class began, and it was then immediately apparent that Gym Ninja's usual bike had been wrecked when she was not here last time. She had a floppy pedal!!!!! Well, OK so the pedal strap didn't work. Every time it was tightened, it'd just then slowly loosen until Gym Ninja's left foot was left flailing around like it was made of rubber. After 10 minutes Gym Ninja abandoned the bike and moved to a fresh one.

The room was BOILING hot! The air con wasn't even blowing warm like it usually does. It wasn't blowing at all and even the Instructor who sits on a bike that has arctic air con streams blowing over her at all times was now sweating like a pig too. Great. Feeling tired and now the unbearable 'spin in a sauna environment' for the next hour. Joy! But what can Gym Ninja do when she's shut in a baking hot sauna style room but sweat like a pig and soldier on?

At the back of Gym Ninja's mind (and head) was the thought 'what about my hair?'

No, this was not Gym Ninja being vain. No. Last night Gym Ninja was bored so had whacked on a brown/black colour hair dye on, and as any girl knows, that first rinse is never quite enough to

a) Remove all of the dye
b) Remove that post-hair dye smell.

So what was the worry about the hair? Well anyone who has seen Gym Ninja post-spin will notice it appears she has dunked her head under water for an hour. So....what if the left-over hair dye that never quite comes off after that first wash decides that NOW is the time to start streaking it's way down Gym Ninja's face and neck? Great. Would Gym Ninja emerge from Spin as the missing member of Kiss? GN could certainly smell the hair dye....the heat and the sweat was encouraging it to run free...

EVENTUALLY (!) the hour was up and the cool down commenced. By this point Gym Ninja's sweat towel was sodden and had no absorbency left. Then the lights went up and......

PHEW!

Kiss did NOT have a new member. Admittedly Gym Ninja again appeared to look post-swim, however there were no black streaks snaking their way across the delts.

With that, Gym Ninja squelched out of the spin studio, nipped to the changing area to dry off and then finished up with some weights work and abs.  Gym Ninja really wanted to hit the Hydropool today too as it's been way too long since her last venture into it, however she decided that it was tempting fate and it would be too hard to explain away a 'BP Oil Spill' type slick of black across the pool if her hair dye decided to finally run.

It is now a fair few hours later and still no sign of the Maximuscle Delivery. Pah!
Ah well, Gym Ninja possibly still has a few scrapings of powder at the bottom of her near-empty tub of Choc Chip protein...fingers crossed it arrives soon......

Food On The Go!

Gym Ninja has been shopping. Food on the go. A bit of a trial of new products, as well as to stock up on her tried & trusty chunky PowerBar Protein Bars.

It's terribly impressive when somewhere mainstream like Tesco start stocking sports and nutrition supplements. Tesco was where Gym Ninja first discovered the delectable craving-supressing Promax Crisp bars. 97p each. Bargain when it comes to trying them out. Of course, now she is addicted she no longer gets them from Tesco (unless she ran out and is awaiting delivery). No-it's cheaper to order direct. Bulk buy, especially when they are on offer direct from Maximuscle, which is most of the time.  Think the current Promax Crisp-related offer with them is that you get a box of 12 free with a tub of Promax Extreme? So what else does Gym Ninja pick up when she is in Tesco?

PowerBar Protein Plus Bars. Yum! Super chunky and chocolately dense protein bars that are perfect to stash in the glovebox or handbag. She gets Vanilla-Coconut flavour and Chocolate flavour, and they are 30% protein. Makes you rather thirsty afterwards though....maybe they are made of those little silicone sachets you find in boxes to dry stuff out??????  OK, so maybe not! £1.66 each in Tesco and about 10p more in Holland & Barretts. They say to have them post-workout, but to be fair, you're better off sticking to a protein shake you can mix up and drink down. These bars Gym Ninja eats when she needs filling up a bit! Usually when stuck in traffic on the motorway.

Whilst at Tesco, Gym Ninja also noticed a new bar. Smaller but hell, a new flavour experience, so let's take the risk and pick up one of each flavour. Meet the Clif Bar. One in Crunchy Nut Peanut and one in Chocolate Chip. Organic too!  Gym Ninja was so keen to trial these for your reference, she accidentally ate both! One after the other. Interesting taste and consistency, if not a tad dry. Didn't taste ANYTHING like either of the flavours really, but again, if she is pushed for something it is maybe worth considering....Waaaaaaaay after all her other supplements of choice of course. Sometimes it takes trying out other supplement snacks to appreciate the ones you usually take!

Other ideal snacks to take out and about with you are 'natures own' snacks, in perfect portion sizes. For example, apples, bananas, pears. Oh and let's be honest, who doesn't like a nice pear eh? Or, if you don't want the whole 'carrying around an apple in your handbag until it rots down to a pulp' type scenario (we've all done it-even Gym Ninja!)  then pick up some 'School Bars'. Asda and Tesco sell them and they are effectively fruit squashed into a bar shape. Tastes a bit like Chewits.  Great to give to little Ninjas too, as they are more inclined to scoff them.

If you are in need of a biscuity type snack (that is not chocolately) then take a look at Jordans Frusli (also at the supermarket). Wheat free too! Nice dunked in tea.  Hmm...Gym Ninja did have other stuff to tell you about that's fab for taking with you when you need to maintain energy levels and fuel the body (eg when driving, Christmas Shopping, working etc), but the current freezing weather has frozen her Ninja brain and so she will have to abandon her informative post today, without fully spurting out her info. Ooops!

But before she goes, she did have an idea for a great Christmas gift to give a friend or family member who is a fitness fanatic. A Christmas Hamper filled with supplements! Either check out the websites of your favourite supplement companies and see what offers they have on right now and buy  a selection that meets their fitness goals, or just pick up some different snack and protein bars and make a fitness selection box!

EG, for someone who is trying to reduce body fat and tone up, Gym Ninja would buy Promax Diet, Thermabol and Promax Crisp bars (with maybe some CLA thrown in if she is feeling generous) and put them in a nice wrapped gift box.

For someone wanting to build muscle and stay lean, she'd maybe buy Cyclone, Thermobol and Promax Meal Bars...perhaps with some Creatamax thrown in? Again, depends on who it is as to how much she'd buy!

The Selection Box may have her beloved Promax Crisp bars in it with her equally loved PowerBars, maybe some Clif Bars and so on.....you get the idea. Time to get creative with your Christmas Gifts if you know for a fact they are loving their healthy lifestyle.  You don't have to buy all the stuff from one brand. You can mix and match for some variety. Go on...you must know someone who'd like that?

OK, Gym Ninja is now frozen solid so will sign off today...... see you all tomorrow!

Silly Billy Ninja!

Oh dear!

You'll recall that yesterday Gym Ninja was icky sicky/over-trained/mentally drained (delete as applicable)  and was toying with the idea of sneaking off to the gym for a surreptitious workout? Albeit a toned down weights-only workout? Well....why didn't you STOP her? *sigh*

OK, so off went Gym Ninja yesterday after work, dragging her wearing icky sicky feet to the gym. Maybe she will feel better once she is there? She already knows she will not attempt cardio, but instead do a lighter version of her usual upper body routine. Just to get her muscles pumping and maybe flush out whatever this nasty evil draining bug is in her. If it IS a bug? If it is mental fatigue then maybe it will help her?   Plus, she collected her recent delivery of 4 boxes (yup, 4!!!) of Promax Crisp Bars today...well, they were (and still are actually) on offer for 'Buy 3 get 1 free' so it'd have been rude to buy any less...ahem...oink.......so she was kind of inspired!

Once at the gym, GN stuffed her bag into the locker and headed up the main staircase of the gym. Today was NOT the day for tackling the spiral staircase that runs directly up from the Female Changing Rooms to the upper level of the gym. Not with dizziness!!!! She took the 'sensible' route and clung onto the metal handrail of the main staircase, despite knowing full well it would predictably give Gym Ninja an electric shock as she did so.

*ZAP!*

Yep. There it was. Electric shock! Whoevers idea it was to fashion a handrail in a gym full of people clad head to toe in man-made fabrics wants shooting. Is it  purely coincidence straight-haired people join the gym and frizzy haired people leave it...?

At the top of the stairs, Gym Ninja bumped into an acquaintance. Lanky. Lanky was keen to drag Gym Ninja into the 5.30pm Spin Class but GN quickly explained her 'illness' which was why, unfortunately, she would not be able to attend tonight's class. Besides, Penguin (aka the Fat One) was taking the class. That means you may as well free-wheel through the session, as he certainly does. Lanky was sympathetic.

"Oh, that's a shame. What's wrong with you?" He enquired.
"Dizziness, feeling exhausted, generally weak and drained", Lamented Gym Ninja, feeling sorry for herself.
Lanky nodded.
"Aww, sorry to hear that mate!" He said.
*Cue weak smile from Gym Ninja.*
"So,...fancy trying Khai Bo Class after? It makes you sweat LOTS!". Lanky grinned at Gym Ninja. She stared back at him.
"Er...I'm sick, weak and dizzy remember?" She reminded him. Khai Bo indeed! May as well order a body bag.....!

Gym Ninja shuffled into the womens section of the gym, did some Dynamic Stretches to warm up, then picked up a lighter than usual barbell to begin with a bent over row.  To her right was a girl standing in front of the  mirror, dumbbell above her head performing an Overhead Triceps Extension....with a 'twist'. An unintentional twist, but one all the same. The girl had crossed her left foot over her right in almost a ballet-style position, and was arching her back so badly she looked banana-shaped. Gym Ninja winced.

Back to her bent Over Row, Gym Ninja realised that even the lighter weight was a tad too much for her faffy weak grip. Stupid Ninja. Fancy coming to the gym when under the weather. Ah well, she was here now...and she'd set up in the far corner of the free weight area so she could be weak and feeble alone. Well, that was the plan, until all of a sudden, a huge woman came over, and stepped in front of Gym Ninja mid-row.

"Excuse me!" Bellowed Giantess.

She stuffed herself between Gym Ninja and the Cable machine that is never ever used, in the corner of the free weights area. Ooops. Who'd have thought someone would use that today? Gym Ninja repositioned herself and carried on as best she could.

Having given up after 3 sets of reps, Gym Ninja dragged herself across the room to a bench and got some dumbbells, ready to do a chest press. Just as she was adjusting the bench, someone barged into her, nearly knocking her flying as they rushed past. Giantess! Gym Ninja looked around. ACRES of free floor space and she had to squash past her? WTF???

UUUHR! Tough going today, even with cotton-bud sized weights.  Once that particular exercise was completed, Gym Ninja stood up and was about to move over to the weights when a girl fell over her bench! She'd been carrying a mat above her head and part of the mat had flopped over her face just as she strode past Gym Ninja's bench, obscuring her vision and resulting in her walking slap bang into it. Thank GOD GN had finished her set. A face full of passerby would not have done wonders for her energy levels!

Struggling next with overhead Dumbbell Presses, Gym Ninja soon realised that she'd do far more damage than good by being here. It wasn't 'flushing out' the germs or helping alleviate the mental fatigue. It was just making her feel even weaker. But Gym Ninja would just try some Hammer Curls and overhead (non-banana spine) Triceps Extensions 'just to make sure'....nope! DISASTER! Time to go home with your icky feeling of weakness. In fact, it was rather selfish of Gym Ninja to rock up at the gym feeling less than 100%. Goddamit, what is this evil source of Kryptonite that was draining her so badly??

Once in the changing rooms, she retrieved her bag and checked her work phone. A work email.

"Uhhhr!" Tutted Gym Ninja

"Oh I'm terribly sorry, were you using this locker?" Enquired a woman next to her. OMG, the woman had thought Gym Ninja was 'Uhhhr-ing' at her! A quick apology and explanation later about her tutting outburst, and Gym Ninja was off, into the night.....at about 3 mph.....

So, my Ninjarettes, it is not always the best idea to force oneself to go to the gym when tired. Occasionally (less often than you'd think mind!) you actually ARE too tired to go!
Signing out for today....

'Man Who Drive Like Hell Bound To Get There!'
(how terribly irrelevant today actually!)
